At Nonington School we operate a skills based curriculum, the head teacher and teaching staff are committed to teaching the objectives of the National Curriculum 2014 in the best way to suit the children. Therefore setting a prescriptive set of topics would limit our ability to respond to the specific needs of the children and to react to additional stimulus that may occur.
At the beginning of the year we agree a long term plan for each class/year group which is published below for your reference. Please note however that this is subject to change.
Maths, Reading and English are taught with direct reference to objectives in the National curriculum.
For teaching of phonics the school currently uses a combination of Letters and Sounds and Jolly Phonics.

The early years are taught through topic areas with subject coverage amalgamated and key skills covered through interactive and focussed play.
The Government suggests all KS1 & KS2 children participate in a daily English lesson and follow a syllabus and the National Curriculum.
Speaking and Listening is a vital part of the child’s day at school. It may take the form of organised talking e.g. news time, teacher’s conversation with children, stories or discussion about subject matter being studied, drama, surveys, research, interviews etc. It is a very important area of the English curriculum and one valued and developed in school.
Reading is taught using a wide range of reading books and a number of other published schemes and using a range of methods and techniques as well as with a wide variety of apparatus purchased and home-made. When funds allow and with the help of The Friends of Nonington School we purchase attractive library books which children are able to use at any time within their class. The emphasis is on confidence and pleasure. Each child is expected to take a reading book home every night to share with an adult. Reading books are changed daily if required.
It is expected that as children progress from infants to juniors they will be able to read and write confidently. Reading development goes on in all curriculum areas and children are taught to use the library and be selective in fiction and non-fiction reading.
Writing progresses from mark making through emergent writing to individual writing. Cursive handwriting is taught so that letter shapes are made correctly. From the beginning children are encouraged to record their own ideas by asking the teacher to write captions for pictures and by writing and drawing freely. Written language is the natural development of spoken language. Fluent speech helps towards clarity and interest in written work. Children are encouraged to talk about ideas, communicate news, discuss discoveries and when ready write them down. In addition to these activities, each class spends one hour a day following the National Literacy Strategy and its planned sequence of activities.
The children have a daily maths lesson. The school follow the White Rose Maths Hub scheme. This is based on progressing the children through three stages of learning in each area of learning – fluency, reasoning and problem solving. The curriculum identifies the content and sequence of lessons throughout the year and are supplemented by mathematical experiences in other curriculum subjects.
We try to make certain that children learn through first hand experience and practical activities. Mathematical activities are frequently set for homework and every child is encouraged to learn their multiplication facts. There are regular mental arithmetic tests.
History is taught at both Infant and Junior levels. Attainment Targets include the development of an awareness of the past, the study of the life, work, leisure and culture of previous times and acquiring knowledge about famous people and local and national events. We aim to make a variety of resources and experiences available to enable the children to compile evidence, question reliability and make deductions.
Children learn about physical, human and environmental geography. They learn about the immediate vicinity other areas in the U.K. and different countries around the world. They also study rivers, weather, settlements and environmental change. The geography scheme of work ensures that all children develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required at a level appropriate to their ability.
The staff at Nonington School recognise the importance of computing and aim to develop all pupils confidence and competence.The school has interactive whiteboards in each classroom and the required ratio of computing equipment for children, including the recent purchase of 32 I-pads to support learning.
Our main aim is to help children learn Science through first hand experience. The child’s surroundings are used to arouse interest, curiosity and concern. Children are expected to observe carefully, carry out simple experiments and investigate and test theories. Observations and measurements are recorded in detail and the children are encouraged to draw their own conclusions.
Art and design
Opportunities are provided for the children to use a wide range of techniques, media and materials. These include clay, wood, collage, sewing, paints and crayons. They are encouraged to develop a visual awareness of line, shape, texture and colour. Work is developed from direct experiences as well as from imagination. Children are introduced to the work of famous artists and art from different civilisations and cultures. There is a weekly craft club.
We aim to extend and deepen children’s responses to music through listening, performing and composing.Every child has the opportunity to sing, listen, play and move to music. External practioners are regular visitors to the school. Year 3 and 4 have weekly ukulele lessons for example.
Modern Foreign Languages
Our school introduces the children to conversational French in the reception class. Junior classes have a weekly French lesson and progression is ensured throughout the school.
The physical well being and development of children is catered for by regular physical activity. P.E. and games are taught throughout the year in the hall, playground and on our school field. The school competes with other schools in football, hockey, netball, rounders, cricket and athletics. A sports day is held at the end of the Summer term.
There is swimming at Simon Langton Boys’ School Swimming Pool for all children from Year 2, on a regular basis. The children are given the opportunity to work for their Amateur Swimming Association Awards and Life Saving Certificate. Parents are asked to pay per week to cover the cost of transport and tuition. We encourage our non-swimmers to gain confidence in the water and progress to teach and develop swimming and survival techniques. Children leaving primary school are required to swim a length of the swimming pool.
Although no longer part of the national curriculum for Primary Schools, Design and Technology is a part of everyday life and children are taught to recognise this fact by looking at designs in the home and in the world around them. Children have the opportunity to find out how things work. There are regular practical sessions when children are instructed in the correct use of a variety of tools, equipment and materials. Younger children have access to a wide variety of materials and construction equipment.
